In 2010 I found myself in a beautiful winter garden, thinking around a ceramics commission for the owners. It was cold, the garden bleak and spare and sharp with the beauty of silence.
How to think of the ceramics that might work here? I began to sketch in monochrome, using charcoal and gesso, scratching and bleeding the surface marks into each other to find form in the winter structure.
The drawings extended into paintings which then revealed the potential for the ceramics. Voilà!
